Windy Hollow Missed Heartworm Preventative Policy

We strongly recommend maintaining a consistent monthly heartworm preventative regimen for your dog. However, we understand that life can get busy, and occasionally things may be overlooked, with missed doses being a common occurrence. If this happens, please contact our clinic as soon as possible.

When you call, we will advise you to restart the heartworm preventative immediately and resume the regular schedule. If you are more than two months behind, we will establish a protocol to ensure we detect any heartworm exposure during the period of missed preventative treatment.

We will usually recommend scheduling a heartworm test six months from the date of the missed dose, as it typically takes six months for heartworm infection to be detectable. Additionally, we will arrange a second test six months after restarting the preventative to ensure we cover the time between the missed dose and the resumption of the medication.

These guidelines, recommended by the Heartworm Association, are designed to ensure your pet’s safety and health. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our nurses for further assistance. Our mission is to keep your pets as safe and healthy as possible.
